A large square in black-and-white cobbles, framed by restored Portuguese public buildings. Exhibitions and fairs rotate through it; with nothing on, it is simply an open expanse.
Best time
Dusk, or whenever something is programmed; at noon the stone glares and bakes.
How to go
Many buses run along Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida; it adjoins the São Lázaro quarter.
Tips
- · The surrounding cultural institutions keep separate hours — check before walking in
- · No shade at all — do not arrange to meet here at summer noon
Next stop
Where this line goes next
Walk the slope, or take a bus or shuttle to the next sight, hall or bakery. Do not backtrack.
Red Market
Walk · 10min
Avenida de Horta e Costa
After the ceremonial square you need somewhere people actually shop, or the day is all façades.
Guia Fortress
Walk · 14min
Up through Flora Garden
The square's next stop is the hill above it — spend the legs on the climb, not on a detour to the shops.
