The three-part day
Seven to ten for heritage or the coast; eleven to four inside a resort, a museum or a market; back out after five for the lights. You will actually cover more this way than by grinding through. Never put Monte Fort or Macau Tower at noon.
Water, salt and shade
Carry water and refill as you go — convenience stores and malls are everywhere. The shade at Camões Garden and around the Guia slopes is a genuine rest stop, worth more than another sight. If you feel dizzy or stop sweating, get into air-conditioning immediately; that is not being precious.
Beaches and the summer reality
Hac Sa and Cheoc Van get both crowds and thunderstorms in summer. Afternoon storms arrive fast and there is no cover on sand — when the sky darkens, leave early. Check the day’s flags and notices before swimming; water quality and lifeguard hours are whatever the on-site board says.
