Royal Festival Hall and QEH. Walk the river to the National Theatre; skip the Eye if you are walked out. Next is National Theatre — do not also stack the Royal Opera House the same day.
Analysis
Split the exterior of South Bank Centre from the interior. Foyers about 10:00–23:00; shows are ticketed. Security queues start outside the door; wear flats. On a day the exterior is free, do not buy the interior just for a photo. Leave via Waterloo.
Best time
Afternoon, or before a show
How to go
About 6 min from Waterloo
Transit
At Waterloo for South Bank Centre, match the street name before you walk. With luggage, do not change at a deep-stair station. Keep one train before the last one back to the hotel.
Season window
Guard changes, ceremonies and public holidays close roads around South Bank Centre. Summer noon glare is harsh; winter dusk is early — take the exterior in the morning.
Tips
- · Tickets: Foyers free; performances are ticketed. Plan about 30 minutes.
- · The river terrace is windy
- · Large liquids fail security at South Bank Centre. Coach parties take the pavement; walk in from the side street.
