The cavalry change on Whitehall. Then St James's Park — do not chase a second Guard at the Palace. Next is Downing Street — do not also stack the Tower of London the same day.
Analysis
Horse Guards Parade is not a facade you glance at. Exterior all day; Guard change about 11:00 (earlier on Sunday). The quiet hour is the first after opening. A service may close the nave. Leave via Westminster.
Best time
Be in place before 10:40 on weekdays
How to go
Westminster or Charing Cross, then Whitehall
Transit
Tap at Westminster. If a service closes Horse Guards Parade, do not leave the last train until after the service ends.
Season window
Christmas and Easter change the hours at Horse Guards Parade. In winter stay indoors. In summer the steps bake at noon — move to shade or a side aisle.
Tips
- · Tickets: Exterior free. Plan about 20 minutes.
- · Step behind the rail when the horses pass
- · Keep voices down inside Horse Guards Parade. There are stone steps; wet soles slip. Bags come off the shoulder.
