Station · Approach

Start of the approach. The shopping street begins at the exit; the hall is at the end. Do not stop too long at the first umegae.

Tenmangu · Exams

The Tenmangu of Sugawara no Michizane. The spine of this day. Next is the approach or Kyushu National Museum — not Hakata yatai.

Approach · Umegae

The street from the station to the gate. Buy umegae from one shop — do not queue at every one.

Sweet · Approach

The grilled mochi on the approach. Best hot. One shop, eat as you walk — do not carry three boxes into the museum.

Museum · National

The national museum on the hill behind the shrine. On a Dazaifu day this is the one museum — the Asian Art Museum stays in Hakata.

Old temple · Buddhist art

Older than the Tenmangu. Come if you still have time — not also Mount Homan the same afternoon.

Ruins · Ancient

Foundation stones of the ancient government. A different era from the shrine. See the stones — there is no palace.

Shrine · Mountain

The shrine on the flank of Mount Homan. Come only if you are climbing — it is not an annex of the Tenmangu.

Hike · Half day

The mountain behind Dazaifu. Half a day at least. Choose this or the museum — after you descend, dinner in Tenjin is enough.

Ginkgo · November

The great ginkgo stands in the Tenmangu courtyard, on the way in from the approach. It is not a separate site. November color is the reason to make a trip. Other months, see the tree and continue to the hall or the museum.

Return · Nishitetsu

The Nishitetsu stop on the Kanzeonji side. Returning to Tenjin from the old temple, board here — no need to walk back to Dazaifu Station.
