Melaka / Johor Bahru

Heritage street

The heritage main street — shophouses by day, a weekend night market. Melaka's own axis, not the same day as Petaling Street.

Red square

Red houses, the clock tower and the church around one square. The centre of the Melaka day — then walk up St Paul's Hill.

Gate

The remaining Portuguese gate at the foot of St Paul's Hill. See it and climb — do not spend the morning at the gate.

Ruin

The ruined St Paul's Church and gravestones, with the river mouth below. A short climb with no shade at noon. Then the river.

Museum

The timber replica of the Melaka sultanate palace beside the hill, with exhibits inside. The indoor hour of the heritage day — use it when it rains.

River

Murals and boats on both banks. Walk the bank or take one loop — then eat back on Jonker.

Temple

One of the oldest Chinese temples in Malaysia, beside Jonker. The same faith corridor as Kampung Kling.

Mosque

The Sumatran-style mosque in the heritage grid, next to Cheng Hoon Teng and the Hindu temple. Three façades are enough.

Nyonya house

The Nyonya townhouse museum on Jonker. One indoor hour of the heritage day, a walk from Cheng Hoon Teng.

Night market

The night market that only fills up at the weekend. On weeknights the street is quiet shophouses — do not rebuild the daytime architecture walk around the market.

Museum

The ship-shaped maritime museum at the river mouth. Pick this or the sultanate palace — do not rush both plus St Paul's Hill.

Memorial

The independence memorial beside Dutch Square — air-con and documents. A rain substitute for the hill; skip it if the sky is clear and time is short.

Mall

The mall on the edge of the heritage grid — supermarket and air-con. Resupply only; do not turn the Melaka day into shopping.

Water mosque

The mosque on the water, south of the heritage grid. A ride, not a walk from Jonker. If you add it, drop the Portuguese Settlement or a museum.

Settlement

The settlement of Portuguese descendants southwest of the heritage grid. Evening breeze and food — optional, and not stacked on the same weekend night as Jonker market.

Border city

The border city facing Singapore. This is the axis for a Singapore day trip. RTS passenger service is targeted for February 2027 and is not carrying passengers — you still use the checkpoint.

Station

The rail and bus hub, with the checkpoint nearby. A transfer, not a viewpoint. The RTS is not in passenger service.

Checkpoint

The checkpoint building for Singapore. It is a border node: queue, stamp, cross. The RTS is still not carrying passengers; the target is February 2027.

Old street

Shophouses and coffee in the old town. The walking stretch of downtown JB — not the same half-day as Legoland.

Temple

The old temple in the historic centre, several deities in one building. The same walk as Tan Hiok Nee.

Square

The civic square between the old town and the river. A walk and a skyline — not the shopping home ground.

Mosque

The state mosque to the west, facing the strait. A short ride from the old town — the west end of a JB day.

Palace

The grand palace. Most days you see the exterior and the square. Same belt as the mosque — do not add Legoland.

Mall

The mall by the checkpoint — air-con and a supermarket before or after the border. Not the binge.

Mall

A large mall on the north side of downtown. If you go, split it from the old town — not in the same half-day as Legoland.

Mall

The Mid Valley on Johor's north edge. One option for a shopping half-day. Not the Kuala Lumpur Mid Valley, and not both in one day.

Theme park

The Legoland park in Iskandar. A half-day outside downtown, by car — do not jam it into the same morning as the old-town walk.

Marina

The Iskandar marina, near Legoland. If the park is already done, this is an evening walk — do not return to the old town for a second dinner.
