East Malaysia

Waterfront

The sunset waterfront. This day is the shore plus Sapi or Manukan; Kinabalu Park is another day, and Kuching is not on this map as a walk.

Market

Souvenirs and seafood beside the waterfront. Buy a craft or look at the fish — do not lose the boat in the aisles.

Street market

The Sunday street market is the famous version; weekdays are shophouses. Morning of the waterfront day, boat around midday.

Hill

A small downtown hill toward the waterfront and the sunset. If dusk is already booked for the promenade, come up here in daylight.

Clock tower

The timber clock tower between the waterfront and Gaya Street. One photo, then the jetty.

Pier

The ferry pier for Sapi and Manukan. The departure of the waterfront day; sailings follow that day.

Island

A beach island in Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. Same day as the waterfront, by boat; not the same day as Kinabalu Park.

Island

The other park island, with a bit more infrastructure. Pick this or Sapi as the main island; add the second only if the boats allow.

Beach

The beach south of town, with a strong sunset of its own. If sunset is already at the city waterfront, swim here by day — do not chase both.

Park

The park headquarters and trails, a world-heritage site — not a Mount Kinabalu cable car. There is no cable-car page. Another day out of Kota Kinabalu, with its own ride.

Memorial

The memorial gardens at Kundasang, facing the mountain. Same day as the park headquarters — not with Sapi.

Dairy

The Kundasang dairy and its milk. An easy stop on this day — do not skip the park headquarters for it.

Market

Fruit and souvenirs on the road up to Kundasang. A possible stop on the way back — do not rearrange the park around the market.

Waterfront

The promenade on the Sarawak River. Kuching's day is the waterfront and the old town; Bako is another full day, and Kota Kinabalu is not the same day.

Footbridge

The pedestrian bridge, with the state assembly and the river. Cross on foot to the north bank — do not drive around.

Courthouse

The white old courthouse by the water, now a square and cafes. The start of the old-town walk.

Bazaar

The covered India Street market, cloth and snacks. Same day as the waterfront — then back to the river.

Souvenirs

Antiques and souvenirs beside the water. Buy one thing and stop — do not binge both this and India Street.

Temple

The Tua Pek Kong temple at the east end of the waterfront. The temple of the old-town day — then back along the river.

Museum

The Sarawak museum campus beside the old town. The indoor hour of the waterfront day, especially in rain — not the same day as Bako.

Fort

The small fort on the north bank, looking back at the old town. Walk over Darul Hana — do not take a boat just for this.

National park

Sarawak's coastal park: a car, then a boat. Its own full day — do not jam it with the Kuching waterfront, and do not connect it to Kota Kinabalu.
