The Gion Matsuri shrine; the west gate faces Shijo. After the visit, enter Hanamikoji — do not climb back to Kiyomizu.
Best time
Morning after the gates open. New Year and festivals are separate.
How to go
City bus or subway “祇園四條”. Tap ICOCA or PiTaPa. A city-bus day pass is bus only — not subway or JR.
Tips
- · The Gion Matsuri shrine; the west gate faces Shijo. After the visit, enter Hanamikoji — do not climb back to Kiyomizu.
- · One axis a day. Do not stack Higashiyama, Arashiyama, Fushimi, Kinkaku and Ginkaku.
- · Gion Matsuri is mainly July — Shijo is packed; skew ordinary visits off peak festival hours.
